Lessons and Homework

English National mathematics has two hours of lesson time each week. In addition, an average of 30-45 minutes homework is expected per week in Collège classes, depending on the class - more commitment being expected from Lycée examination classes. Homework may or may not be written work. It may be that all pupils have the same homework, or they may all have individual tasks to work through for the allotted time. Pupils are encouraged to discuss their work at home, and this forms a very legitimate use of some of the homework time, as does revision of topics recently studied.

Note-taking

All pupils are responsible for taking, and keeping, their own notes. They are expected to make the notes that they feel they need to record, based on the mathematics they have worked through. Guidance and encouragement are given for this. The notes are a combination of an individual pupil’s ideas and the combined thoughts of the class and the teacher. As pupils get older, greater responsibility is gradually put on to the pupils to decide what it is relevant to note. This is an important skill to develop for later studies - not just for mathematics.

Range of Mathematics

Pupils are not restricted to a single form of mathematics. All year groups are expected, and need, to experience work in a variety of styles on a regular basis. The types of work experienced will include:

Some work will be more individual in its nature - some will be intended for paired or group work involving more discussion. Many of these listed above wiII feature within a single lesson, some will be happening together at a given moment.
A combination of tests - both short, specific tests based on a section of work just covered and a longer more general test towards the end of the year - is being developed for Collège pupils to help assess progress within mathematics, including reference to the National Curriculum.

For 2nde there are external examinations at the end of the respective years, and the relevant examination and coursework requirements are addressed, even more specifically and frequently than in earlier years.
