Year plans and priorities for each Collège year can be accessed via these hyperlinks:
As already explained in the Organisation section, all classes experience a range of mathematics. The year plans which follow set out the topics studied in each year.
The following overview summarises the major aspects of the Collège mathematics course.
The scheme of work for each year group is divided into modules of work. The choice of topics to be covered in 6ème, 5ème and 4ème has been made on the basis of the key objectives for each year group in the National Framework for Key Stage 3, but also takes into account the French National Curriculum. Working together as a class allows pupils to discuss their own ideas and to listen to those of others, thus benefiting from each other’s knowledge and strengths.
In 3ème where certain major topics have been taken from the 2nde GCSE course. This serves both to relieve some of the pressure on the GCSE course by extending elements of it into the earlier year, and to introduce 3ème students to some higher level work. These topics are then briefly revised in 2nde.
Selected investigations and open-ended tasks are used with all years to introduce a broad range of mathematics including the development of skills for ‘Using and Applying Mathematics’, the first Programme of Study in the National Curriculum (see National Curriculum section). This approach to mathematics serves both to increase pupils’ interest and enthusiasm for the subject and to encourage an understanding of problem solving which will be needed for GCSE coursework.
Classes are given on average one such task each half term covering a range of mathematical areas within a whole year. More able mathematicians are expected to extend their ideas far beyond the initial limits of the work, whilst all pupils are able to enjoy putting a more substantial piece of work together, incorporating several features including an introduction, charts, formulae, comments, conclusions, calculator and non-calculator work, computer use, etc. In addition, practice of skills and revision of knowledge and concepts arising out of these projects will be included.
Specific tables tests / calculator work I practical work / problems / oral work / basic skills practice take place within lessons as and when deemed appropriate for a given class.
