History-Geography

Pupils can opt to study History/Geography in English (OIB) from 6ème through to terminale.

To complement information given at parents' evenings, year plans for each lower Collège year can be accessed via these hyperlinks:

Pupils who choose OIB will study History/Geography in both English and French according to the following table:

While the French History/Geography programme forms the basis of the OIB syllabus, flexibility has been built into the programme to allow for different teaching styles and a wide range of topics, to accommodate an international body of students. Hence, the content covered in OIB will differ from the non-OIB programme (i.e. the programme covered by pupils who only study History/Geography in French).

Although the content may differ, the skills taught to pupils in OIB are in accordance with those within the UK National Curriculum, and the requirements of GCSE and A level.  Important skills - such as comprehension, analysis and evaluation, organisation and expression and research - not only enhance students’ understanding and appreciation of History/Geography during their school years, but are designed to provide useful and necessary skills for the future. Such skills are vital in our mass-media age both to benefit from the endless supply of information available to us, and, perhaps more importantly, to objectively evaluate it.

Within the classroom, students are taught in a variety of ways, which include study of written material and sources, oral work of various sorts and use of ICT, while they will also be encouraged to engage in private research for homework and project assignments.  Both History/Geography teachers  have a wide range experience of  schools and students as well as of teaching styles and examinations.

With regard to external examinations, OIB students will sit :

The coefficients for History/Geography for the OIB examination are as follows:

These make the History-Geography papers, and the OIB papers in general, very important in the candidate's overall marks.

For more information on the coefficients, the structure of the OIB and on History-Geography within this examination, please go to the Cambridge OIB examinations Handbook, available online at : http://asiba.web.cern.ch/asiba/Microsoft%20Word%20-%20OIB%20Handbook%2020%20Dec%2006.pdf

While examinations are obviously an integral part of the school experience for students, the aim of the History/Geography department goes further. We hope that these school years serve as an  introduction to these subjects and the issues and topic raised within them, and that they will encourage a life-long interest in these two subjects.
