The English National Programme spelling policy
Aims of
the policy
-
To
motivate pupils to improve their spelling.
-
To
become aware of spelling rules they need to practice.
-
To
ensure students raise their capacity to analyse their own work for
spelling mistakes.
All teachers are involved in helping
students to identify spelling errors made and to improve their spelling. A
range of dictionaries, of appropriate levels, is available in each classroom
and pupils are taught and encouraged to use these.Additionally, the Primary section
follows the Nelson spelling programme. This series of books extends from Book
A to Book Four. Students work their way through chronologically.
CE
Classes
- Pupils in CE1 complete a unit per
week from spelling Books A and One during the year. Each week there is a
spelling test on the unit that has been prepared. Pupils in CE2 finish Book
One, working through each unit as in CE1.
- At the end of Book One, pupils in CE2
take a spelling test to see if they have acquired the necessary level to move
onto Book Two.
- If they are successful in this test
they will move onto the next book.
- Where appropriate, an individual
revision programme is established.
CM Classes
- When students enter the CM phase of
the primary programme there is a development in the way that spelling is
undertaken, although the methods remain similar to what has gone on in CE
where all students cover Books one and two.
- The CM spelling programme opens with
diagnostic tests on the spelling skills acquired in order for teachers to
place pupils on an appropriate individualised level.
- High frequency word lists are used as
a guide for pupils and parents: the high frequency words are available on the
website.
- Pupils record their own spellings,
which form the basis of self tests. When pupils finish the Nelson spelling
programme they rely on these lists to continue progression.
- Lessons during the year are
punctuated by further tests at various levels.
- Thus a process of continuous
assessment and diagnosis takes place.
