Primary Materials

All Classes:

You will need to provide your child with (French in italics):

A school bag (un cartable)

An A4 ring binder (un classeur format A4), not too thick that is around 4cm thick as opposed to a lever arch file, with clear A4 sleeves (pochettes transparentes format A4) for storing texts used in class and also for storing returned homework.  This ring binder remains in school bag. Thus parents can see returned homework.

Single A4 sheets, large size squares, hole punched (copies simples, format A4, grands carreaux, perforées) for use for homework and occasional class work. This can be stored in ring binder mentioned above.

(Excluding CM2): A very large size notebook 24*32 cm, large size squares, 96 pages (un très grand cahier format 24*32 cm, grand carreaux, 96 pages). Please follow this format which is bigger than A4 (21*29,7cm) as it makes it possible to stick in A4 sheets onto the pages easily, it is as light as possible for pupils, and the squares are a manageable size for clear handwriting. This notebook will be required when a pupil begins ENP (i.e. not at the beginning of each school year, as staff pass on books to the next teacher). Your child will inform you when a new book is needed so it might be a good idea to have one in reserve. This book remains in school.

A small size notebook,17*22 cm, large size squares, 48 or 96 pages (un petit cahier format 17 *22 cm grands carreaux, 48 or 96 pages). This small notebook will be used for parent/teacher communication and in some classes for homework instructions or weekly spelling tests. This book remains in school bag.

A well equipped school pencil case (une trousse) with scissors, glue (Pritt stick type), highlighters, pencil, writing pen, a few coloured pencils, sharpener, small ruler, eraser etc. This also remains in school bag.

Junior dictionaries and Thesaurus are available in class. These would be useful at home too, for use with homework.

ENP teachers distribute to pupils the necessary text books (les livres de classe) for the year. Your child will place their name on these and can annotate appropriately in class and at home. These books will be stored in the school bag as they are needed for homework too.

Please label all materials with your child’s name and class, including text books, to avoid confusion and help us return lost property.

If you are unfamiliar with French stationery standards here’s a few guiding principles:

Paper: In the UK, Ireland, the US, Australia etc. all school paper (apart from art) is usually lined, with or without a margin.  In France all school paper (apart from art) is printed with squares (les carreaux), which come in large (grands carreaux 8*8mm) or small (petits carreaux 5*5mm) sizes.  There is always a margin on sheets with large size squares and there isn’t on sheets with small size squares.  Just to make matters more interesting, Swiss small size squares are slightly smaller than French small size squares and are not accepted in French schools !

Notebooks: In France notebooks (cahiers) usually come in 3 sizes:

- Un petit cahier will be 17*22cm which is bigger than A5.

- Un grand cahier will be A4 = 21*29,7cm.

- Un très grand cahier will be  24*32 cm which is bigger than A4 to make it possible to stick A4 sheets onto the pages easily.
Notebooks (cahiers) can be large size squared (grands carreaux)  or small size squared  (petits carreaux).
Unlike in the UK, US, Australia etc, notebooks are not usually designed to allow for pages to be detached.

Anything smaller than 17*22cm is called un carnet and can be any size. The A5 format is no longer widely available.

Paper sheets: In France paper sheets (copies) usually come in 2 sizes:

- copies petit format will be 17*22cm

- copies grand format will be A4 21*29,7cm.

They can be large size squared (grands carreaux)  or small size squared  (petits carreaux). They can also be hole punched (perforées) or not (non perforées). Finally paper sheets can be single sheets (copies simples) or a sort of 2 page booklet made with a double size sheet folded in half (copies doubles).
