For part time teacher of secondary English (one academic year fixed term contract), please click here (2 below)

1. Part Time teacher of secondary Mathematics

For September 2008: we wish to appoint a teacher of secondary Mathematics in English to teach Mathematics in classes from 6ème to 4ème (British years 7-9) for a fixed term contract of one term, September–December 2008. There is one other full time teacher of Mathematics in the Programme: this is the Head of Department, Mrs Knowles, who teaches years 7-12. Some 10 hours per week of teaching are involved in the advertised post, going up to British end-of-KS3 standard. There are also other duties, such as marking and preparation, which form part of the standard fixed term contract. This is a 10/24 part time position and is paid pro-rata; it is fixed term because of the need to replace a teacher while she is taking a year to focus on training.

Please read the details on this page carefully, then use the rest of the website to discover more about the Programme before applying. Please start by reading the November 2006 Newsletter.

What this post offers

What we are looking for

The candidate should speak English as his/her mother tongue. Our main requirement is love of (and success in) the practice of classroom teaching of Mathematics in English.

We wish to recruit a subject specialist with strong class room skills, and someone who will be motivated by what will be a unique professional experience. An honours degree in Mathematics or a related subject, and a PGCE or other equivalent teaching qualification are needed. The ability to work co-operatively with others and to communicate well will be an advantage.

A working knowledge of French and ICT knowledge and experience are preferred, but are not essential. Interest in and openness to French culture are important assets. This could be an  opportunity for a person who has an interest in extending and improving his/her French mastery.

The Programme

This is an ‘international section’, set up formally within French law in 1981. The role of these sections is to offer tuition in the target language within a French school in certain subjects as part of the school week. Other sections (Italian and German for example) are financed by governments: some British sections are financed privately by parents’ associations. This is the case here. Parents pay directly for tuition for part of the school week. The rest of the school week is taught in French and is free, since this is a state school. This system, which represents significant co-operation between state education and parents' associations, has operated successfully for over 30 years.

International sections are thus an integral part of French state international schools. They typically provide 6 hours of teaching per week to students who otherwise follow the state curriculum in French for 20-30 hours per week. English is taught for 4 hours each week, History-Geography for 2 hours and, in this school, Mathematics for 2 hours. French and English sections together form a fully bilingual curriculum. The Lycée in Ferney-Voltaire is unique among French international schools in offering Mathematics in English. History-Geography is the subject which is taught as the second subject in all other International Lycées in France. Students choose between History-Geography and Mathematics in most classes. Take-up of Mathematics by pupils has always been strong. Mathematics is taken by all pupils in French - within the French part of the school and following the normal French curriculum - as well as in English. It has long been one of the most important subjects in the French school curriculum, and has a central place in pupils' and parents' minds as a key subject.

Class sizes in the Programme range from low (10 or so) to moderate (25 or so). A full time table comprises 24 hours of teaching per week, spread over some four and half days. Other duties include meetings within the Programme, planning, preparation and marking, record keeping, meeting pupils and parents, and so forth. The school day runs from 7h55 until 17h30. The school year is short and intensive. Duties and conditions of work are set out in a contract (in French) and in an appended job description (in English).

Details of the salary scales applying to this post can be consulted on http://ala-elp-db.web.cern.ch/ala-elp-db/staff/salaryGrid.asp .

Your questions on this post are welcome: please contact the Head of Programme, Peter Woodburn by email to hop@enpferney.org. Applications should be sent to his email address and copied to secretary@enpferney.org (but see the instructions on applying above).

2. Part time teacher of primary and secondary English

For September 2008: we wish to appoint a part time teacher of primary and secondary English to teach English in classes from French levels CM1 to 5ème (British years 5-8) for a fixed term contract of one academic year, from September 2008. Some 10 hours per week of teaching are involved in the advertised post. There are also other duties, such as marking and preparation, as well as working within the small teams which deliver the curriculum at each level. The teacher appointed will work within primary and secondary English teams, the primary team being 8 strong and the English team 6 strong. The position, which attracts a 10/24 pro rata salary is a fixed term contract because of the need to replace a teacher on extended maternity leave. Hours are likely to be placed on about 5 half days each week.

Please read the details on this page carefully, then use the rest of the website to discover more about the Programme before applying. Please start by reading the most recent ALA-ELP Newsletter.
