Following a meeting with the Inspecteur Académique de l’Ain in Bourg-en-Bresse on Tuesday 20th October, we would like to inform ENP parents that the proposed movement of half the English National Programme to the collège in St Genis will not take place in September 2010. All ENP students will remain on the Ferney-Voltaire site for the school year 2010-2011.
This decision has been made by the Inspectorat and is based on demographic fluctuations across the Pays de Gex that necessitate a complete revision of the carte scolaire (geographical catchment areas). The Education Nationale is currently conducting a survey in order to draw up a revised carte scolaire. A definitive list of collège catchment areas will not be available before November 2010.We would like to reassure the parents of CM2 children who may have received an official looking form (issued by the Education National) concerning collège choices. We have been told that this form is for statistical purposes and does not represent a final choice of collège on your part.
Note: For background the original article giving the previous plan is shown below :-
Following the opening of a new collège in Peron, several changes are occuring in secondary education in the Pays de Gex. The French education authorities are redrawing the carte scolaire (geographical school catchment areas) for the Pays de Gex in order to better accommodate the increasing number of pupils overall in the region. From the rentrée in September 2009-2010, 150 pupils (from the communes of Chevry, Crozet and Echenevex) currently attending collège in Gex will move to the Collège Jacques Prévert in St Genis ; whilst many pupils (from the communes of Thoiry, Challex and St Jean de Gonville) currently in St Genis, will move to the new site in Peron.
Overcrowding in the Ferney ‘Collège International’ is due mainly to the presence of international students who attend Ferney instead of their local collège (because international sections have only been available in Ferney.) These represent some 60% of the 830 pupils at present, in a collège built to house about 600. Half are English National pupils who represent about 30% of the total number of collège students. The Programme is the obvious candidate to be divided in two. In this way overcrowding at Ferney can be diminished, the rebuilt collège in St Genis can be well used and geographical re-organisation can be made coherent.
At present it is envisaged that only ENP will move in September 2010. It had previously been thought that the Italian Section would move at the same time, but this is now unlikely. It is, however, possible that other national sections will move when the second site of the International Lycée opens in St Genis in 2013-14. For many international students traveling time will be cut. The two international sites at college level will have their own catchment areas, which are currently under consideration by the Inspecteur in Bourg en Bresse and will be defined during the course of the next academic year 2009-2010. These areas must be able to deliver the desired split: about half of ENP pupils need to be moved to St Genis collège.
As governing body of the ENP, the ALA-ELP committee is working hard to make this move as smooth as possible. We are committed to offering the same educational opportunities within the Programme and to providing the same high standards across the two sites. To this end, meetings are already underway with the Inspecteur Académique de L’Ain in Bourg-en-Bresse, Mme. Barrier, the Principal at the Collège Jacques Prévert, Mr. Brech, the Proviseur in Ferney-Voltaire, the ALA-ELP vice-president, Julie Badoche and Mr. Woodburn, the Head of Programme.
Contact between the schools and the various bodies involved has been fruitful and constructive. Most recently Mme. Barrier visited ENP to see lessons and find out more about how ENP forms an important part of the Collège International.
Obviously members will have questions concerning a wide range of issues such as transport, catchment areas, length of the school day, language options etc. ALA-ELP is consulted, but ultimately decisions on these issues are beyond the control of the committee. This page will be regularly updated to relay answers to those questions as details are decided. See also the minutes of the 18th May AGA linked from the ALA-ELP members web site with the question and answer session on the St Genis extension.
